MORTH Trials Innovative Geo-Resin Technology to Stabilize Indian Highways

DELHI, May 2025 — Uretek India recently conducted a high-profile demonstration of its proprietary Geo-Resin Grouting Technology on the South-Eastern Peripheral Expressway. The event showcased advanced solutions for soil stabilization and infrastructure maintenance, aiming to extend the life-cycle of India’s rapidly expanding highway network.

High-Level Delegation Inspects Sunken Bridge Approach

On May 16, 2025, senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) attended a live demonstration at Chainage 123/250RHS. The delegation included:

  • Mr. Pankaj Aggarwal, MORTH Chief Engineer
  • Mr. Bidur Kant Jha, MORTH Technical Director

The trial focused on a critical “sunken bridge approach” site, a common infrastructure challenge where the road meets a bridge structure and undergoes differential settlement.

Diagnostic Phase: Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) Testing

To determine the root cause of the ongoing settlements, Uretek engineers performed extensive Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests. The results provided a clear “before and after” picture of the soil health:

  • Initial Findings: Tests revealed that 2 out of 4 locations showed zero compaction (0 CBR) at depths between -3 meters and -7 meters.
  • Sub-grade Voids: The data identified significant weaknesses in the natural ground level, demonstrating an urgent need for deep-layer compaction to prevent further sinking.

The Solution: Geo-Resin Injection and Slab Re-leveling

Uretek demonstrated a multi-faceted approach to repair the expressway without the need for traditional, time-consuming excavation:

  1. Slab Re-support & Lifting: The technology was used to fill voids beneath the concrete and physically lift the sunken slabs back to their original grade.
  2. Precision Monitoring: Because highway surfaces are sloped and cambered for drainage, engineers used straight edges and string lines rather than standard Relative Levels (RLs) to ensure perfect flatness and transition.
  3. Sub-grade Improvement: Beyond mere lifting, the core value of the UIPL (Uretek India Pvt. Ltd.) technology is its ability to improve the bearing capacity of weak sub-grade in a single work shift.

A “Perfected in India” Technology

Originally developed in Europe and the USA, the Geo-Resin technology has been specifically adapted and “perfected” for Indian soil conditions and environmental factors. By injecting high-density resins into the ground, the system compacts the surrounding soil through expansion, creating a stable foundation that resists future settlement.

Conclusion: Extending Highway Life-Cycles

The successful demonstration highlights a shift toward non-invasive, rapid-repair technologies in India’s infrastructure sector. By addressing sub-grade weaknesses in a single shift, MORTH and Uretek aim to minimize traffic disruptions while significantly extending the operational lifespan of major expressways.
